While the different breeds available in various versions of the game is explained elsewhere, it is important to note that additional breeds can be unlocked in each game. In fact, all 15 initial breeds in the Japanese edition and 18 breeds in the North American/European editions can be unlocked in each version of the game. This short guide will do a little explaining on how to obtain other breeds in your Nintendogs game.
Some breeds can be unlocked simply by obtaining trainer points and then unlocking the breed of the player's choice. Other breeds, however, need to be obtained through playing wirelessly with other Nintendogs owners. For this reason, it is good to have a friend or two with different versions of the game to trade pets with so you can get the perfect selection of pets for your preference.
Also, it is interesting to note that two additional breeds of dogs, the Jack Russell Terrier and the Dalmatian, can also be unlocked by taking your pet out on a walk and finding certain items. The Jack Russell Terrier can be unlocked in any version of the game by finding the “Jack Russell Terrier Book.” The Dalmatian, on the other hand, is exclusive only to the North American and European releases of the game. This spotted canine can be unlocked by obtaining the elusive “Fireman’s Hat” while taking one of your pets out on a walk. Although these items can be difficult to find, it is always fun to unlock these cute, rare little canines and own one for yourself.
Any unlocked breeds can then be obtained and placed into one of your three active pets at your home or be held in the “Dog Hotel.” Unlocked breeds contain their own, unique personalities but can be interacted with and trained similarly to any of the initial pets available in the Nintendogs releases.
